Cruising along when—bam—mystery light on your dash? Some mean “meh, check it later”, others scream “PULL OVER NOW.” Learn What’s Urgent & What’s Not.

Alright, road captain, let’s talk dashboard warning lights.

You’re cruising, minding your own business, and then—bam—a mysterious little orange or red symbol pops up on your dashboard. Your heart drops. Is it nothing? Or is your car about to explode?

Spoiler alert: Not all warning lights mean panic mode. But some? Yeah, you better listen. Let’s break them down, so next time your car lights up like a Christmas tree, you’ll actually know what to do.

🚦 Color Code: What Do Dashboard Warning Light Colors Mean?

💚 Green/Blue → “All good, buddy.” These lights are just info (like headlights or cruise control being on).

🟡 Yellow/Orange → “Hey, maybe check this out?” Something needs attention soon (but you probably won’t die).

🔴 Red → “STOP NOW.” This is serious, like “pull over before your car gives up on life” serious.

🚀 Pro Tip: If any light starts flashing, that’s your car screaming at you. Don’t ignore it.

🚨 The Most Common Dashboard Warning Lights (And What To Do About Them)

1️⃣ Check Engine Light 🔥 (A.K.A. The One That Makes Everyone Nervous)

Looks like: A tiny engine icon (or just the words “CHECK ENGINE”).

🟡 Yellow? → It’s probably a minor issue (but don’t ignore it forever).

🔴 Flashing?Pull over ASAP. Your engine could be in danger.

🔧 What to do?

Check your gas cap (a loose one can trigger it).

Notice rough driving or weird noises? Get it checked NOW.

No symptoms? It might be an emissions issue—still, scan it with an OBD2 tool or visit a mechanic.

2️⃣ Oil Pressure Warning Light 🛢️ (A.K.A. “Your Engine is Thirsty”)

Looks like: An oil can with a drip.

🔴 Red? → This is bad. Like, engine-failure bad.

🔧 What to do?

Check your oil level immediately. If it’s low, top it up (with the right oil).

Still on? You might have an oil leak or a failing oil pumpdon’t drive until it’s checked.

3️⃣ Battery Warning Light 🔋 (A.K.A. “Start Praying”)

Looks like: A little battery icon with plus and minus signs.

🟡 Yellow? → Your battery’s struggling, but you still have time.

🔴 Red? → Uh-oh. You might not start your car next time.

🔧 What to do?

Check for corrosion on the battery terminals.

Turn off electronics (AC, lights, radio) to reduce battery drain.

If your car struggles to start, get your battery tested ASAP.

4️⃣ Brake Warning Light 🛑 (A.K.A. “You Like Stopping, Right?”)

Looks like: An exclamation mark inside a circle (or just the word "BRAKE").

🔴 Red? → Your brakes might be failing. Yeah, don’t ignore this one.

🔧 What to do?

Check if your parking brake is still on (happens to the best of us).

If it stays on? Your brake fluid might be low. Don’t drive until you check it.

Still acting weird? Could be worn brake pads—get it checked ASAP.

5️⃣ Tire Pressure Warning Light 🚨 (A.K.A. “Pump Up the Jams… and Your Tires”)

Looks like: A horseshoe shape with an exclamation mark.

🟡 Yellow? → At least one of your tires is low.

🔧 What to do?

Check your tire pressure at the nearest gas station.

If one tire is REALLY low? You might have a slow leak. Check for nails or damage.

If it keeps coming back? Your TPMS sensor might be broken.

6️⃣ Coolant Temperature Warning 🌡️ (A.K.A. “Your Car is Overheating, Friend”)

Looks like: A thermometer floating in water.

🔴 Red? → Your engine is too hot—like, "risk of serious damage" hot.

🔧 What to do?

Pull over and turn off the engine ASAP.

DO NOT open the radiator cap while the engine is hot (unless you love 3rd-degree burns).

If you’re low on coolant, refill it (but only once the engine cools down).

If it keeps happening, you might have a coolant leak or a thermostat issue.

7️⃣ ABS Warning Light 🚦 (A.K.A. “Your Anti-Lock Brakes Might Be on Strike”)

Looks like: A circle with "ABS" inside.

🟡 Yellow? → Your anti-lock braking system isn’t working, but regular brakes should still be fine.
